Rivers United defeated Enyimba in their Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match in Port Harcourt on Monday afternoon, with Ishaq Kayode scoring his 12th goal of the season.
Rivers United grabbed a 2-0 win over Enyimba International thanks to two goals from Ishaq Kayode and Chiamaka Madu in the first half.
Kazie Enyinnaya, Morice Chukwu, and Fabian Nworie returned to the starting eleven that defeated Katsina United 1-0 on matchday 22 in Katsina.
Both teams needed to win this game, but United got off to a quick start, winning a penalty just 18 minutes into the contest.
After Ishaq Kayode was brought down in the 18-yard area, the referee awarded a penalty kick. The forward coolly took the penalty kick and nailed it for a well-deserved lead for the home club, his 12th goal in the NPFL season.
When Akuneto’s cross dropped for Nyima Nwagua in the 30th minute, the Pride of Rivers almost extended their lead, but he missed the target.
Three minutes later, Chiamaka Madu made it 2-0 for Stanley Eguma, concluding a fantastic team move with Nyima Nwagua, who provided the assist.
After Onoja linked excellently with Chiamaka Madu and the later shoots, the hosts were close to making it 3-0, but his effort wasn’t capable of inflicting any harm.
Rivers United continued to strive for a third goal to complete the rout, but the score remained the same, with Rivers United taking all three points.
The win sees Rivers United maintain four points gap at the top of the table as they have now amassed 52 points from 23 matches while Enyimba drop to nine place with 32 points.
