Bruno Fernandez scored twice in each half of Portugal’s World Cup match against Uruguay in Group H, round 2, and it was enough for Portugal to advance to the round of 16 in the International Football Championship.

After receiving an assist from substitute – Raphael Guerreiro, the 28-year-old midfielder opened the scoring for Portugal in the opening 54 minutes of the second half.

The second and decisive goal was scored through penalty in the third minute of the second half’s extra time.

Alireza Faghan, the match referee, awarded a penalty following a VAR review after an aggressive Uruguayan defender grabbed a goal-bound ball within his team’s goal area.

In the waning seconds of stoppage time, Bruno Fernandez expertly placed the ball into the Uruguayan goal for their second goal of the game.

Ghana and South Korea will now compete for the final group qualifying spot for the Championship’s round of 16.

Portugal needs a point versus South Korea in their final match to advance to the round of 16 and claim the group lead.

Uruguay still has an opportunity to get to the knockout rounds, although they must defeat Ghana and hope South Korea loses.
