Egypt advanced to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after defeating Ivory Coast 5-4 in a penalty shootout at the Japoma Stadium in Douala on Wednesday.
The Manchester United defender missed the penalty kick, giving the North Africans the edge.
After a goalless tie at full-time and extra time, the Pharaohs qualified for the knockout phase after Ahmed Zizo, Amroel Soulia, Omar Kamal, Mohamed Abdelmonem, and Mohamed Salah all converted penalty kicks.
Nicolas Pepe, Ibrahim Sangare, Maxwel Cornet, and Wilfried Zaha all scored penalties for Ivory Coast, but Eric Bailly’s attempt was saved.
Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea has reached to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after overcoming Mali 6-5 on penalties on Wednesday.
It was a tense match at the Limbe Stadium that could not be decided within 120 minutes, until Sacko missed a seventh-round penalty.
After a scoreless tie at the end of extra time at Limbe, Falaye Sacko missed a key goal that gave the National Thunder the victory.
The final score came as a shock to Mohamed Magassouba’s team, which started brightly, dominating ball possession but failed to capitalise on their opportunities.
